Pulmonary pulse wave velocity as assessed with velocity-encoded MRI

چکیده
Methods In 15 healthy volunteers (7 male; mean±SD age 19±6 years) pulmonary PWV was prospectively assessed between the proximal main pulmonary artery (MPA) and just before the first branching of the distal left pulmonary artery (LPA). One-directional through-plane velocity-encoded (VE) MRI using breath holds was used to assess the pulmonary flow at the levels of MPA and distal LPA with a temporal resolution of 15 ms. Pulmonary PWV was calculated by dividing the pulmonary path length between the measurement sites by the transit time between the arrival of the systolic wave front at these sites. The volunteers were studied twice to test reproducibility in PWV-assessment.

Pulmonary artery stiffness assessed by velocity-encoding MRI: comparison of techniques
Introduction The pulmonary artery (PA) plays an essential role in smoothing the transition from right-ventricular pulsatile flow to the nearly steady-flow at capillary level. The loss of PA compliance has considerable influence on elevated right-ventricle workload. MRI velocity-encoding is an effective technique for assessing pulse-wave-velocity (PWV) by measuring the disturbances in flow or ve...
متن کاملEvaluation of reducing temporal resolution on the accuracy of aortic pulse wave velocity assessment from velocity encoded MRI
Background Aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), the propagation speed of blood flow velocity waves through the aorta, is a marker of aortic stiffness with prognostic value in various diseases with vascular expression. One-directional throughplane velocity-encoded (VE) MRI, planned perpendicular to the ascending aorta and additionally transecting the proximal descending aorta (Figure 1), is a valid...
متن کاملAssociation between pulse wave velocity from velocity-encoded MRI and advanced diastolic function indices assessed by speckle tracking strain analysis in Diabetes Mellitus type 1
Methods First normal values for age-related PWV were determined. Twenty-five healthy volunteers (age range 18-65years) were recruited and PWV-values of the total aorta were assessed with velocity-encoded MRI using a 1.5T MRI scanner (Philips, Best, the Netherlands). Linear regression between PWV and age defined normal values. Next, PWV was assessed in 17 consecutive DM1 patients (mean age 48±8y...
متن کاملLeveling of arterial wall stiffness between aortic arch and left carotid artery due to aging is associated with reduced volume flow towards the brain: pulse wave velocity evaluation with high-field velocity-encoded MRI
Background A discrete transition of wall stiffness at the interface of a compliant aorta and stiffer carotid arteries creates a reflection site for the aortic pulse wave and consequently limits excessive pulsatile energy transmission towards the brain. Arterial wall stiffness can be expressed by the pulse wave velocity (PWV) and dualslice one-directional through-plane velocity-encoded (VE) MRI ...
متن کاملSite-specific coupling between aortic pulse wave velocity, carotid vessel wall thickness and peripheral stenosis severity in peripheral arterial occlusive disease at 3T MRI
Background Arterial wall stiffening and thickening are part of the atherosclerosis process leading to luminal narrowing. A close link between distal aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) and peripheral vascular disease, reflecting sitespecific relationship between local plaque burden and vascular disease, is hypothesized. Purpose of this study was to compare peripheral arterial stenosis severity on ...
